3. Streaming Media Performance

  • When viewing video with a 56k dial-up modem video clips may not play back as smoothly as one might expect. It mostly has to do with how streaming media works. Streaming video works by playing the video while it is being downloaded. The benefit is that you don't have to wait for the video to download before viewing the clip. The downside to this is that the speed of your modem may not be able to keep up with the speed that the video is being transferred.
  • If Internet traffic is heavy, meaning that there are a lot of people on the Internet at the same time, it can slow down your connection. If the video is being transferred to your computer at a slower than optimal rate, it will stop, and then start again as traffic congestion eases. This is the primary reason video does not playback smoothly.
